3 Tips to Help You Avoid the Resolution Rut

2021 is here and like most of the world, you are probably thinking about what your New Year Resolutions will be. Rather than fall into the rut of setting and forgetting your resolutions this year, create goals that inspire you to get up every day and get after accomplishing them.

I love the rhythm of our calendar and the fresh start that the New Year offers. I’ve learned a few tricks over the years to help energize me all year long, unlike the lack-luster feelings of short-lived resolutions. I enjoy the new year more as a result - it’s a great time to reflect on the learnings brought by the previous twelve months, and set new goals to provide motivation in the new year. This year, I’m especially ready! As you begin to consider goals for your life this year, I encourage you to focus on setting goals that will inspire you every day and not just at the beginning of the year. Here are three practical tips for creating and achieving goals that inspire you.

  • Focus on the “why”: When you focus on setting goals that have meaning to you, there lies intrinsic value that gives you the grit and determination to achieve them. The “why” can take on many forms, but more than anything it won’t quickly change and you will be sure to set goals that you truly want to achieve.
  • Ensure you can take action today: It’s good to have goals that are big and lofty, even outlandish and audacious, but be sure to create goals that you can take action on TODAY! In a sense, great goals allow you to set “mini-goals” that you can quickly achieve as you pursue them.
  • Make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound): Identify what you will know, where you will be, what you will see, hear or feel when you reach your goal. Ensure that it is achievable - there should be no doubt that with enough effort, support, focus, or determination you can reach your goal.

Now that you have some structure for how to set your goals, it’s important to reflect on where you are at today. Although we had a fair share of challenges in 2020, it was also an opportunity to create positive change and growth. Now more than ever we are seeing the value of learning technical skills. Now more than ever company leaders are allowing employees to work virtually from anywhere. Now more than ever technology is playing a very central role in our lives. As we look toward 2021, set goals that challenge and inspire you to evaluate your career and gain new skills that will propel you to thrive in 2021 and beyond. No matter the industry you are passionate about, technology skills will undoubtedly play a central role in your ability to perform your job well and stay relevant in the future. From agriculture to medicine, finance to e-commerce, technical skills are at the very center of how we work and there is no better time than now to gain the skills you need to find and flourish in a rewarding new career.
